Our Team

Luis A. Cortes MD, MBA –  Managing Partner

Dr. Luis Cortes is a practicing anesthesiologist and drug development consultant.  Prior to joining Biocoast capital in 2015, he worked in the venture capital industry in San Francisco, evaluating new life science investments.   He was a medical director for research and development at Abbott Labs, working to develop novel medical compounds.  Dr. Cortes has fifteen years of clinical experience and twenty years of military leadership experience.  He also served in multiple assignments at Brooke Army Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center.  His extensive life science research experience includes a research associate position at the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Laboratory under the supervision of Nobel laureate, the late Dr. Paul Lauterbur.  Dr. Cortes holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.  He completed his anesthesiology residency training at the University of Illinois medical center.  He earned a Doctor of Medicine degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Bioengineering from the University of Illinois.

 

Ron Oxom-Kinder, PhD –  Managing Partner

Dr. Ron Oxom-Kinder is financial services and technology consultant with more than 20 years experience in analytics & risk management, and product life-cycle development in software and hardware.  He has worked in Wall Street for various financial service companies and banks.  His work at Bloomberg, Citigroup and Bank of New York Mellon focused on managing and implementing enterprise-wide analytics & risk solutions, business valuations, M&A, and securities pricing.  Most recently, he worked at IBM in an advisory role providing functional and technical expertise to worldwide clientele in risk management including market, credit, liquidity, operational, and regulatory.  He has worked in Silicon Valley for the semiconductor industry in varying roles responsible for strategic product/process development of CVD/PVD applications, marketing, and sales.  He has also served as Dean of Engineering at the University of Illinois – UIUC campus focusing on all undergraduate academic and student affairs.  He has published research in varying technical and business journals, presented in various technical conferences, held university/corporate seminars, and has over a dozen registered patents.  He holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois – Urbana and a Master’s of Financial Engineering from the Haas Business School at the University of California – Berkeley.

 

Julio Vijil MD, MPH – Managing Partner

Dr. Julio Vijil is a practicing nephrologist and healthcare capital investor.  He has partnered in several successful ventures including Hollywood Dialysis, LLC, and Nephroceuticals, LLC.  Julio has worked with several pharmaceutical companies presently and in the past, including Takeda Pharmaceuticals and Otsuka Pharmaceutical, on advisory boards and as a speaker.  Julio was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine and held a lecturer position at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.  He was awarded two National Institutes of Health grants and worked on a major NIH funded multicenter study of chronic kidney disease called the CRIC Study. Julio also served as medical director of the dialysis unit at the University of Illinois Medical Center.  He is a former reviewer for both the American Journal of Nephrology and Kidney: A Current Survey of World Literature.  Julio is a graduate of Cornell University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology with a concentration in physiology.  He holds a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine.  Post-graduate residency in internal medicine and fellowship in nephrology were completed at the University of Illinois Medical Center.  He completed a Master of Public Health with a concentration in epidemiology from the University of Illinois School of Public Health.
